The 9TH IMGA took place in 2013.
Here are all the games awarded that year.
The IMGA got much bigger in its 9th year, with almost double the entries and nominations of the previous year. 2012/13 was clearly a stand-out year for innovative gaming, and we think all 57 of our nominees are still worth checking out. This year saw the creation of Clash of Clans and Candy Crush, as well as cutting-edge innovations such as Spaceteam and Taiso, storytelling pioneers such as Yesterday, and the documentary experiment the Battle of the Bulge.
As well as a huge amount of entries, it was also noticeable that iOS was no longer the predominant platform for mobile games. Android games had doubled in performance, which still continues to grow today. It was an exciting year, with technology still developing and becoming more available to a much wider audience.
It was also a notably great event – held at the Fairmont Grand Ballroom Lounge in San Francisco in March 2013. Originally, the event had been planned elsewhere, much nearer to the Moscone Center where the Game Developers Conference (GDC) was held. However, their organisers asked our venue to cancel the event, as they saw it as a competing event! While this was not our intention, it was a massive compliment to be so closely associated that we’d be considered competition. Either way, we needed to rearrange our venue, and the grand ballroom was available.
This unique venue made our entertainment even more impressive. Our event sponsors, King, had arranged exceptional acts to perform on the night. We had Sirqus Alfon, a Swedish 2-man circus with amazing visual and musical special effects, and a great Canadian DJ called The Slag. If you want to check some of this out, you can do so here! Our host, Maude Garrett, was our first ever professional awards host. He’s a great radio and TV host and his passion for games made him ideal for the night – it was a great evening.
The 9tH IMGA showed us that development in mobile gaming isn’t slowing down – it’s getting bigger and bigger. With Android becoming increasingly competitive with iOS, and almost everyone has a smartphone of some kind in their pocket, games are everywhere. And we’re keen to keep awarding the best ones!
